Hyosung upgrades ATMs with Fujitsu’s palm vein biometric technology for high security
Hyosung has integrated its self-service ATMs with Fujitsu palm vein biometric authentication technology to increase security, the company announced.
A leader in self-service banking in retail and financial institutions, Hyosung’s ATMs improve operations through flexibility and reliability, the company claims. Their modular design ensures minimal downtime.
By integrating Fujitsu’s PalmSecure Technology, the ATMs are equipped with palm vein biometric authentication, no longer relying on physical ID forms, passwords or PINs. The technology is contactless, more hygienic when compared to other biometric technologies, and impossible to forge or spoof, according to the announcement.
To read the palm vein patterns under the skin, users hold their hand above the sensor for authentication. A near-infrared light registers the palm vein pattern and sensor encrypts the data. The data is then sent to the processor where it is converted to a biometric template and creates an individual key.
The devices that have been upgraded with biometric technology are Hyosung’s MX8200QTN, MX8200QT, and MX8800 branch transformation self-service devices, and the 7800 series and 8300 series ATMs.
“At Hyosung, our goal is to continually improve our product by applying real solutions that work. Fujitsu PalmSecure technology provides the security, reliability and innovation that has made us a world leader in the ATM marketplace,” Hee-Eun Ahn, CEO of Hyosung America, said in a prepared statement.
PalmSecure is certified as compliant with Electronic Prescription for Controlled Substances (EPCS) regulation by iBeta Quality Assurance. It has a low false acceptance rate of 0.00001 percent and false read rate of 0.01 percent.
The company explains PalmSecure is superior to finger vein authentication because external factors such as abrasions, hair, skin conditions, and water or lotions do not affect recognition accuracy. If palm vein authentication is not possible, other parts of the body can be used such as vein patterns in cheeks.
